About this Artwork: Czar Catstick

The 'Turing Tests' (I-VII) are included in my Alan Turing Series of Commemorative Portraits.

Part of this series ('Turing Code') was chosen as part of the Saatchi Art Collection: 'Eye Candy: Works Inspired by Op Art' Collection.

The 'Turing Test' Series of artworks are a fusion of Typography, Computer Generated Displacement Effects and Pop Art Stylised Spot Painting Backgrounds - including rainbow coloured Spotty British Union Flags and Computer Code. A Surreal Pop, New Media Collage of equations, binary code, fibonacci numbers and pattern formations based on his experimental work on the Chemical Basis of Morphogenesis plus notes from Alan Turing's life

Alan Mathison Turing, OBE, FRS was a British mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst, philosopher, computer scientist, mathematical biologist, and marathon and ultra distance runner. He was highly influential in the development of computer science, providing a formalisation of the concepts of "algorithm" and "computation" with the Turing machine, which can be considered a model of a general purpose computer. Turing is widely considered to be the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence. The 'Turing test' is a test of a machine's ability to exhibit intelligent behaviour equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human.

Turing was prosecuted for homosexuality in 1952, when such acts were still criminalised in the UK. He accepted treatment with oestrogen injections (chemical castration) as an alternative to prison. Turing died in 1954, 16 days before his 42nd birthday, from cyanide poisoning. An inquest determined his death a suicide; his mother and some others believed it was accidental.

On 10 September 2009, following an Internet campaign, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown made an official public apology on behalf of the British government for "the appalling way he was treated." The Queen granted him a posthumous pardon on 24 December 2013.

'The Imitation Game' is a 2014 film starring Benedict Cumberbatch, based on the biography of Alan Turing: The Enigma by Andrew Hodges. The film had its world premiere at the 41st Telluride Film Festival in August, it also featured in the 39th Toronto International film Festival in September where it won "People's Choice Award for Best Film," the highest award of the festival.
